It is time for you to get fit, but how should you go about it?  After all, the last time you tried to get in shape, just after New Year’s, you only made it three days before your plan fell apart.

Here are some tips for getting in shape:

  • Commitment – You need to start with a plan and then stick to it.  Buying an exercise bike is not a plan.  Make an exercise schedule instead of buying expensive clutter for your home.
  • Schedule – As mentioned above, a schedule is very important.  A little discipline will help you meet your schedule, whereas planning to exercise in whatever free time you have available is a sure way to do nothing.  Regular exercise is the only way to get in shape.
  • Don’t Give Up – Don’t abandon your goals if you miss your scheduled exercise.  Some people will simply give up on their current plan if they miss a session or two (“This didn’t work, so I will start again in a few months.”).  Don’t do this.  You made a commitment and this is the right plan for you.
  • Pay More Attention to Your Food – This is one of the hardest parts for many people.  If you have trouble with a strict diet, you can start eating better (or at least not so horribly) by looking for alternatives to those foods you eat most often.  If you are an ice cream junkie, check out the low-fat varieties.  Small differences in fat and calories can make a big difference over time.
  • Have Fun – You shouldn’t expect exercise to be as much fun as watching your favorite movie, but it does need to be enjoyable.  If you hate what you are doing, you will never be able to stick to it.  Check around for different exercise programs and activities in your area.  Ask your friends what they do and don’t be afraid to try something new.
