Learn Grappling!

With the popularity of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the United States growing everyday, it is no wonder that we see grappling tournaments being advertised everywhere. However, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is only one style of grappling, and there are others that are just as popular, if not more so.

Grappling was around nearly as long as man. Homer references wrestling, likely the most popular form of grappling worldwide, in the Iliad. That’s from the 12th century B.C.! Not many other forms of combat have that kind of staying power.

Speaking of lineage, the word wrestling comes from the old English, and is likely the oldest word for hand to hand combat still in the English language.

Grappling is the Base of all Real-Life Combat Situations

However, don’t use grappling interchangeably with grappling. While wrestling is a form of grappling, it has specific rules and techniques that don’t necessarily apply in other forms of grappling, or in multi-style grappling tournaments.

However, that being said, there are significant advantages to cross training through the different forms of grappling. Someone with a wrestling background is often much harder to sweep than someone from another style.

Of course there are disadvantages as well. When Royce Gracie went up against a judoka, the judoka kept trying to roll onto his belly. That’s a good position in judo, but it’s fatal in Jiu Jitsu. Needless to say, Royce made quick work of him.

Trying to list all the types of grappling would be a daunting task. For wrestling alone there are several main varieties and if you count folk styles independently, there could well be hundreds.

But as stated before, BJJ is certainly popular in the U.S. And if you want to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Fredericksburg, then the Lab MMA is the only place to go. Professor LeBrun is the ONLY BJJ black belt in Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg or anywhere else near here.

So if you want to train with the best, you train at the Lab MMA in Fredericksburg!
