Hey everyone, here is the next fight in the line-up: Jason Heflin vs Jerry Coto! This match went to the second round, and is a good example  of ground fighting with some stand-up mixed in.

That was a good solid fight, with a little bit of everything. Both men started strong, but some well timed moves by Heflin left him the victor.

After the initial clinch, Coto had a good take down that transitioned seamlessly into side mount. But he let Heflin get onto his knees and Coto tried to sprawl on him. Heflin used that to his advantage, and just stood him up using the cage.

After a brief exchange of kicks, Heflin lands a solid right to Cot’s dace and drops him. It’s funny in the video, because just before that, you can clearly hear someone yell “Punch him when he kicks!”, which is exactly what Heflin proceeded to do!

Coto has some cat like reflexes, because even though he was the one who went down, he still managed to catch Heflin in his guard. He almost caught Hefflin in a triangle, but that’s a hard move to cinch when your dealing with a sweaty opponent. But when Heflin gets free, Coto scrambles into turtle, and takes some serious blows to the dome. Heflin looked to be putting Coto into a rear-naked choke, but the round ended before it was effective.

The start of round two was much like round one, with an exchange of punches and kicks. However Coto seems to overextend himself on a high kick and loses his balance and drops to his knees. Heflin is on him in a flash, and takes advantage of his opponents mistake and takes COto’s back.

From here, it’s game over for Coto. He takes a number of blows to the head, and misses his chance to get Heflin in half-guard (probably the two are related). Heflin gets total back control and proceeds to apply the rear-naked choke again. This time the round doesn’t end quick enough for Coto, and he taps out.

Good Jiu Jitsu/Grappling training and good Kickboxing/Muay Thai skills are integral to any fight, and these two showed both. If you’d like to learn how to compete in the cage, check out the Lab MMA for the best MMA in Fredericksburg!
